COM 254 Course Description

COM 254  (3 credit hours)  

Introduction to Intercultural Communication  

Introduces intercultural communication with an emphasis on the relationships between culture and communication, social/psychological variables, verbal/nonverbal language systems, intercultural communication perceptions, and conflict resolution. Includes the practical application of contemporary issues in cross-cultural interaction, media representation, and daily social interactions to intercultural communication concepts. Lecture: 3.0 credits (45 contact hours).

Pre- or co-requisite: Current KCTCS placement scores for college level reading and writing, or consent of instructor.

KCTCS Course Competencies for COM 254

Upon completion of this course, the student can:

  1. Identify, locate, evaluate, summarize and interpret a variety of reading material dealing with the study of intercultural communication.
  2. Recognize the basic elements of culture and the effect of one’s culture upon communication with others.
  3. Identify and interpret cultural stereotypes as presented in the mass media (i.e., film, television, print, etc.).
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of ethical considerations in making value judgments about the customs, traditions and communication techniques practiced by people from other cultures.
  5. Demonstrate the skills necessary for effective cross-cultural interaction.
  6. Describe the nature of ethnocentrism, explain how to modify unacceptable communication behaviors and identify strategies to overcome them.
  7. Describe the process of perception and the perceptual problems most commonly found in cross-cultural encounters.
