Why Medical Assisting?

Medical Assistants are essential members of the health care team. They perform a variety of duties such as administrative/clerical tasks, patient care, laboratory procedures, phlebotomy tasks, electrocardiograms, electronic health record management, administer medications and injections, and patient education.  Why should you become a medical assistant?

  • 10 Month/2 Semester Program:  In less than a year, students can complete the program and certification requirements, making them job-ready fast.
  • Great Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, day shift, no holidays while working in a medical office
  • Great Pay:  Average pay is $16 - $18/hour.
  • High Demand:  One of the fastest-growing health care occupations, employers are earnestly seeking certified Medical Assistants.
  • Employment Prospects:  Job growth for medical assistants is projected to grow 15% from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median annual wage for medical assistants was $42,000 in May 2023. Most medical assistants work in physicians’ offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and other healthcare facilities.

Medical Assisting Exam Prep

Medical Assisting Students will take the Certified Clinical Medical Assisting Exam. The exam takes place in May after the students complete the MA Program. The cost of the exam is $165.00, is 3 hours long, given on a computer and consists of 150 multiple choice questions. The exam is administered by the National Healthcareer Association.

Student Success

The first group of students graduating from the Medical Assisting Program at ACTC was in May of 2024. Hannah Kiser was one of those graduates. She completed the program in two semesters, passed the National Certification exam and received a Certificate from ACTC. Hannah is currently working as a MA at Dr. Ballard Smith, DMD, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Office in Morehead, KY. She loves the job and the people she works with. Hannah commented, “Every skill that I learned during the MA Program at ACTC I use on a daily basis and the program prepared me even more and made me more confident in going into the healthcare setting.”
