Medical Information Technology (MIT) Resources

MIT Credentials

There are many credential options for students in the MIT program, and most will end up earning each one offered.  These credentials includes:

  • AAS degree in 3 degree emphasis tracks, including Medical Coding, Medical Administrative, and Medical Office Management
  • Diploma - Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Diploma - Medical Records Specialist
  • Certificate - Medical Coding
  • Certificate - Medical Receptionist
  • Certificate – Electronic Health Records Specialist
  • Certificate – Medical Unit Coordinator
  • Certificate -  Hospital Admission Specialist

Employment Prospects

Job growth for medical records and health information technicians is projected to grow 13% by 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This rate of growth exceeds the average of all occupations. As demand for healthcare services increases, more trained coders will be needed to manage the increased claims for reimbursement from insurance companies.

Graduates from the Medical Information Technology program have become employed in a variety of administrative medical careers, including Medical Coders, Medical Office Coordinators, Medical Records Specialists, Insurance Specialists, and Medical Billing Specialists. 

The MIT program has recently worked with local employers such as UK-King's Daughters Medical Center, Pathways, Inc., Ramey Re-Group, VA Medical Center , OVP Health, Medical Claims Assistance, AdaptHealth (formerly We Care Medical), Premier Physical Therapy, and Ashland Children’s Clinic.

There is also opportunity to work REMOTE in many MIT related positions !

American Academy of Professional Coders (APPC)

AAPC is the nation’s largest education and credentialing organization for medical coders, billers, auditors, practice managers, documentation specialists, compliance officers, and revenue cycle managers. All members of AAPC agree to abide by the AAPC Code of Ethics, which ensures high levels of professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior.

The ACTC-MIT program prepares students to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam upon completion of the Medical Coding degree track/certificate credentials.

The AAPC helps people find, begin, and maintain new careers. Guidance is also provided to members to determine the right career path, provide resources and support throughout their studies, help them land their first job and give them the means to advance their careers. From the tools and resources AAPC offers to a network of over 220,000 coders, billers, auditors and AAPC employees to help them along the way, one thing is certain: AAPC members are never alone.

Student Success Story

Regina Brown graduated from the Medical Information Technology program in spring 2024, earning an AAS degree along with 2 diplomas and 5 certificates!  On top of her degree completion Regina has also become a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) as well as earning the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant and Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist credentials.  Regina is now currently working for the Huntington, VA as a medical coder!
