Ashland Aesthetics Project

Central Park by Keyleigh Stanley, Treasurer for ACTC-PTK Chapter

In the 1900’s Central Park was sold to the City of Ashland by Kentucky Coal and Manufacturing company. There used to be a horseracing track in its place in the 1920’s. Now there are many facilities available to the public. Sport activities are held here with access to two sand volleyball courts, five tennis courts, a baseball field, and a basketball court to enjoy along with concession stands. There are many other eye-catching places to relax including the gazebos right beside the fountains and gardens. Secluded places like these are nice to enjoy books or even a lunch break.

Central Park is most known for the pond and log house, known to be the oldest house in Ashland. These two facilities are most used when homecoming and prom comes around. Other seasonal favorites in the park includes the annual Winter Wonderland of Lights each Christmas, and the spread of daffodil blooms in early spring, a staple for taking photos.  The Central Park isn't just known for its beautiful gardens and pond, but also has historical locations near the Ashland Library, a phenomenal resource for our community. Another fascinating feature of Central Park are the Adena burial mounds. “The mounds served as burial, ceremonial, and historical landmarks for the ancient people. The mounds developed when layers upon layers of deceased members of the group were buried atop one another over the years. Ceremonial items and tools often accompanied the deceased when buried.” (Tim Talbott, Indian Mounds).
